Redken’s Shades EQ line is fantastic. After watching my last stylist use it on my hair for a couple years, I decided to give it a shot myself when I stopped working in the neighborhood near her salon. It’s very, very easy to use and leaves my hair shiny and healthy looking. As a demi, it does wash out with shampooings, but I shampoo only 1-2x a week these days anyway. Be sure to use the Redken Shades EQ Processing Solution with it. Mix equal parts til well combined and you’re good to go. My very fine hair likes about 20-30 mins, but be sure to do a strand test. A quick google search will yield Redken’s Shades EQ color chart, but IME the shades pull MUCH darker than the chart indicates. You can counteract that somewhat by diluting your color with Shades EQ Clear gloss (same Processing Solution ratio of 1:1). You can find Shades EQ lots of places online, including Amazon and Ebay, but I’ve had the best luck ordering from SleekHair.com (not affiliated in any way). I do wish they had the full range of tints, like the metallics, though. For me an extra dollar or two isn’t worth the chance that the bottle might not be adequately sealed prior to shipping or may already have been opened, as has happened when I’ve ordered elsewhere.Oh and speaking of opened bottles – and this will probably horrify the pro stylists, but here goes – I find that I don’t need to use the whole bottle at a time especially when I’m mixing colors. For me, the color seems to work the same, with no issues, even after the same bottle has been open (and then tightly re-sealed after pouring the amt I need) for 3-4 weeks.

Answer:I would have to look at the whole Redken color chart to figure that out. I think if you go to the Redken website they have a shade progression progression chart. I have very dark brown hair and have gotten a lot gray this past year. I won’t use anything but Shades. It actually makes my hair stronger, thicker, and shinier. Don’t be afraid to go a little darker for a richer color. It blends nicely after two washes. Can you send me a picture of your current color?

I just used Shades EQ for the first time and I’m absolutely loving it!! I needed to neutralize the overly golden tones in my blond hair so I used a formula suggested by an MUA’er on Hair Board. I had balayage done a couple of months ago and my stylist used bleach (with Olaplex thank heavens!) and two additional shades to create a multidimensional effect. However, prior to this I was coloring my hair regularly using a 40 volume peroxide and had used a color remover because I tried a new brand of hair color which came out too dark. Suffice it to say that my hair is very porous. Consequently, the beautifully neutral hair I walked out of the salon with changed within a month to an overly warm, ugly golden hue. I initially went back to my stylist so he could apply a toner, which he did, and it completely changed my hair into an ashy, dark shade that didn’t even look blond anymore. So after that mess faded (it took a full month) my hair was back to the overly gold shade. I tried using purple shampoos, but their effects are only temporary and didn’t last through a regular shampoo (I didn’t want to use purple shampoo for EVERY shampoo because it’s drying). So I was back at square one. But someone on Hair Board took pity on me and suggested I use the following formula in Shades EQ: 9V + 9NB. 9V is a violet based shade and 9NB is a neutral/brown based shade. So I ordered them from ebay along with the processing solution. I mixed 1 ounce of each shade with 2 ounces of solution and applied this mixture to clean damp hair. I checked the results in the mirror every 2 minutes, until I saw that the strongest gold pieces were neutralized. This took a total of about 8 or 9 minutes. I then rinsed and conditioned. The result was a beautiful warm neutral shade that is very close to the one I left the salon with. I am, of course, very happy with the result. It’s always nerve wracking to try a new hair color product, but thanks to some awesome help from HB, my hair couldn’t have come out better! It’s super soft and super shiny and the color will last many weeks because I use a sulfate free shampoo and try not to wash my hair too often. All in all, I’m super pleased with Shades EQ and will definitely make it my regular toner. It’s more expensive than the toners at Sally’s, but I believe it works much better. My hair looks like I just stepped out of a salon. My stylist will FREAK! LOL!! I highly recommend this product.

To tone down brassy color, consider a green neutral shade, a neutral shade, or a titanium shade. To lowlight hair and add more depth, select the correct level and tone of Shades EQ Color Gloss and hair color. If you’re unsure what shade or gloss to use, visit a beauty-supply consultant and ask their advice, or ask to see the Redken Shades EQ chart. However, please note that when lowlighting, it’s important to formulate lighter than the natural level and include warmer tones in the shade you choose. Select the appropriate shade or gloss to balance your current results.

By Micah from Michigan on April 1, 2014 Hi I have 1B color hair. And would like to lift enough to achieve the below color. I was leaning towards 3RV but have read these shades pull dark? Should I use 4rv instead? I also want to highlight a little and was thinking 5rv? If I am completely off base please help! By Maiia from San Jose, CA on April 13, 2014Answer:If your hair was colored, you can’t use color lighter, only darker or the same. The color can’t light other color. So you’ll choose the color of 1 level or high-lift your hair with bleach powder.

This is hands down the best demi perm color I’ve found at Sally’s. The blue and violet kickers actually DO SOMETHING. I really recommend them for those looking for a lovely blue or violet tint to black hair. I used one of the darker browns (I believe it was Espresso, though I’m not sure) and it was the wrong tone for my skin color and came out too dark, but the formula was fantastic! My hair was super shiny and not damaged. The color was beautiful (just not on me). I never went back to Shades EQ because it’s a deposit only color (my hair is naturally black and requires a lot of lift to get to the light/med brown I enjoy) so I went back to permanent colors. I think I’ll buy this online to refresh my color since I moved to a country where there’s no Sally’s. The price is great, it doesn’t smell too bad or make your eyes water and the colors are beautiful. One lippie off because it just doesn’t last.

LOVE IT November 22, 2016 I’ve tried so many toners and nothing works as good as this toner. The platinum ice ends up looking like exactly seen on photos when u search for redken shades eq platinum color. I absolutely love it. It takes care of brassy shades and I leave it only 5 minutes and it works perfectly. Even when I don’t bleach perfectly and might end up with orangish bleached hair, this toner still works perfectly. It doesn’t damage the hair and lasts up to 3 weeks. I choose this toner over any other one. Mariam Miami, FL 4.5 Stars I would recommend this item to a friend.
