Thanks so much for watching my newest video on building a 20′ long garage storage shelving unit! I hope you enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed making the video and the storage unit!  It was fun! Now it’s your turn – here’s the plans for the project! Some project notes: You can make your shelving as long or short as you want.   The span between leg sets can be altered.  Mine are about 5′ appart, and it’s plenty strong.  I’d go wider (6′) so that you can fit three of those giant storage totes per shelf.  According to the Sagulator you can put about 200 pounds on a six foot long shelf, made of 4 2×4 boards.  You can go taller if you want. You can add more shelves, at any height. Make sure you secure to the wall to prevent forward tipping or racking I recommend a good self tapping screw so you don’t have to predrill any holes (as I do in the video).  Try these for building the “ladder” legs –     And you can use something smaller, like these, for attaching the shelving boards to the ladder leg sets –   Share when you are done with your project, I love seeing how your projects turn out! Great plans! I built two and put them together in an L for our basement. Being a intermediate DYIer (tackled a lot of projects, but as I tell my wife, I’ll be twice as long as a pro and it won’t be quite as good, but always passable), this one was right up my wheelhouse. A couple of variations, first, I didn’t need the full 8′ in either direction, so I cut the 2″x 4″‘s so that each yielded 75″ high/long and 21″ on the sides. I did the “inside” configuration as I had to cut the shelves anyway. The other difference is I used my pneumatic framing nailer with 2 3/8″ nails which isn’t as pretty, but really fast and easy. Finally, I attached the whole structure to the walls with 3″ deck screws. Thanks for the plans – going to do more in the basement and a bunch in the garage!

Acclaim Renovations and Design Day 4: Get everything off the floorStoring stuff on the floor of the garage invites mildew and water damage, and makes it easier to let things get messy again. If you do not already have a storage system in place, now is the time to get one.Use vertical space. Consider adding tall shelving units and a ceiling-mounted platform. Use the walls. Don’t let a wall go to waste! If you have two walls filled with shelving, fill the other one with wall-mounted storage. It can be as fancy as a custom storage system or as simple as a pegboard and a row of wall hooks. Bikes, tools, shovels, rakes and sports gear can all be hung on the wall, avoiding the dreaded floor pileup.

The right storage is of course the key to creating these efficient processes.  I believe everyone should know how to use a drill and a saw so they can create a custom furnished home, designed specifically around their family’s patterns and storage needs.  And if you can build, you can keep up with your family’s changing needs as children grown and interests evolve.  Just a few years ago, I had no idea that a third of my garage storage would need to be dedicated to hockey gear – back then I couldn’t see past the baby dolls and dress up costumes.

Garage storage and shelving solutions are abundant, but the prices can be shocking. You can build your own garage shelves from scrap 2 x 4s and plywood, ones that will hold all of your tool cases, hardware, batteries, and more. This project can be completed in an afternoon and will instantly improve your work area.

Agree, great plans. Built one this weekend with a few variations – pressure treated 2×4 footers (damp basement floor), shelves 3 feet deep, and 2×3 shelf beams. The deeper shelves meant extra plywood and possible sagging so I put cross braces and extra 2×4 vertical posts in the middle – front and back matching the corner posts. Looking back the extra vertical posts might have been overkill but since I had it (and the cross braces) I was able to use 2×3’s for the front shelf supports and 1/2 inch plywood shelves. So to summarize … your plans are excellent, my variations were acceptable but time consuming, and the end result is working shelves!
